Your Say

OHS Reps @ Work invites elected OHS reps, workers and others interested in OHS to 'have your say' and contribute to our forum topics.

The intention of the forums is to provide you with the opportunity to give your views, make observations, and respond to others' views on a range of OHS related issues. The VTHC OHS Unit moderates the forums: we reserve the right to edit for length, legal reasons or to reject a post if it is irrelevant to the topic or too specific. If you have any concerns, you are welcome to communicate these to us at ohsinfo@vthc.org.au

A model OHS Act
The Labour Federal Government has started the ball rolling on a model OHS Act. Your views? What do you think are the most important features to include?

Workplace facilities
First Aid facilities
Under the 2004 OHS Act employers must provide 'adequate facilities for the welfare of employees'. Nothing more is specified, but employers have had two codes of practice (Workplaces and First Aid) for 'guidance'. What are the first aid facilities like at your workplace? Do you think they are good enough? Have you had problems getting what you consider is 'adequate'?

Other workplace facilities
Employers should also provide workplaces with a range of other facilities, as per the Workplaces Code of Practice. These include dining and washing facilities, toilets, adequate light, comfortable temperatures and more. What about your workplace? Does it 'measure up'?

Problems at my workplace
What are the OHS problems at your workplace? How have you tackled them? Do you have any advice to others? Or do you want others to give you some ideas about how to deal with these problems? Give us your views.

New OHS Act
Consultation
There's an entire new section on consultation in the new Act - employers will have to consult directly with employees on a range of issues - including how that consultation is going to happen. Where there are OHS reps, this consultation must involve those reps. What do you think of Part 4 of the Act? Will it make it easier for workers and their reps to have an input into what happens at the workplace?

Deputy reps, Multiple reps
Workers in Designated Work Groups (DWGs) will be entitled to negotiate to have deputy reps for each of their OHS reps. They will may agree that some (or all) of the DWGs in the workplace should have more than one elected rep. Do you think any DWGs in your workplace will end up with either deputies or more than one rep? Why? How do you think this will improve representation?

Right of entry for union officials
Under the new Act, 'authorised representatives of employee organisations' will be able to enter a workplace where they suspect there has been a contravention of OHS legislation. What do you think about this?

WorkSafe's Advice on the Act
WorkSafe has produced two new publications on the 2004, one for reps and one for workers. What do you think of them?
