Nanotechnology - proposed legislation

At the end of 2009, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) initiated a stakeholder consultation process and issued a Discussion paper which proposed a regulatory package for industrial nanomaterials, both for new chemicals and for nano forms of 'existing' chemicals. (The VTHC submission to the Discussion paper can be downloaded on the right hand side of this page)

Changes were introduced in terms of requirements for nanoforms of 'new' chemicals (that is, chemicals not already listed on the AICS) with introducers of these chemicals, irrespective of quantities being introduced, required to notify AICIS.

However, how nano forms of existing chemicals are to be regulated is still under discussion, having been put on hold until such time as a review of AICIS has been completed.
